In Psalm 23, the Psalm of David, God is described as the good shepherd. If we think of a shepherd, we might associate him with somebody uneducated and poor. Equally, Jesus was poor when he was on earth. He is born in a stable, wears simple clothes, and spends his time wandering around and talking with those who are sick, poor, and expelled from society. Those who long for status and the riches of this world don’t understand how somebody claiming to be God would not want to surround himself with riches, gold, diamonds, and powerful people.

However, the Christian God is different: his wealth is not in any way connected with earthly trumpery. Jewels, diamonds, gold, and earthly status are worthless to God. Further, God is almighty and can have everything if he wants; the only things that count to him and are of real value are richness in spirit and virtue. Jesus is well endowed with a richness of good deeds, love, joy, honesty, and peace.

In conclusion, those who trust God do not need to have any fear. They can build on the riches of spirit and virtue, and they can trust that God himself is their good shepherd and will lead them to the right place and give them whatever they need.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
