You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
Exodus 20:2–6

Jesus confirms the primacy of this commandment when he is asked about it:

“And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.”

Matthew 22:35-38

Through these passages, we understand that it is central to God that we love him above all. But Exodus 20 begins not with a demand, but with a reminder. God’s claim to our exclusive love is grounded in his saving work and covenant faithfulness. He is not a distant power, but the Lord who rescues, claims, and cares for his people.

When God calls himself a “jealous God,” it is not petty jealousy but covenant jealousy: the zeal of a faithful husband who protects the relationship from anything that would destroy it. He knows that any “god” we place beside or above him will enslave and ultimately harm us. Thus, exclusive devotion to God is not only his right as Creator and Redeemer, but also for our deepest good.

What Is in It for Us When We Love God Above All?

God does what is good for us, and this includes commanding us to love him with all our heart, soul, and mind. When we love God above everything else, we do not lose but gain:

Stability when everything else shakes
Imagine you have a job and you love this job above everything else, including God. You spend day and night at this job and pour all your energy and affection into it. God encourages us to work diligently and contribute, but with proper measure and order.
Now imagine a severe economic downturn; you lose that beloved job. If your job was your highest love, your life now seems meaningless; you feel lost, and you may blame “fate,” other people, or even God for taking away your greatest treasure.
When something created sits at the center of our heart, any loss of it becomes a kind of “mini apocalypse” for us.

Freedom from fear and despair
God grants humans real responsibility and freedom; in a fallen world, good and bad things happen. God can and does intervene, yet he does not always shield us from every hardship. Still, for those who love him, Scripture assures that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
If we love God more than any gift, then when we lose our job (or anything else), we can remain anchored. We know that our life is not defined by this single role or possession. A job becomes what it truly is: a meaningful but temporary way to contribute, to serve, and to earn money—never our ultimate identity. There may be a thousand other paths, some even better than before, but in all of them God remains the same.

Assurance of God’s presence and purpose
Scripture not only promises God’s providential working, but also his special nearness to those who love him. Jesus says that the one who loves him and keeps his word will be loved by the Father, and “we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23). Loving God opens us to a deeper experience of his presence, comfort, and guidance.
Thus, when we love God above all, we become more resilient:

We know that the Lord, the ultimate wisdom and love, watches over us.

We trust that even what we do not understand is held within his good purpose.

We live with the confidence of Romans 8:31: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Living according to our true purpose
The greatest benefit is not only resilience or inner peace, but that we live as we were created to live. Humans are made to love God above all; anything less dis-orders our heart. Loving God first puts every other love (family, work, success, pleasure) in its rightful place. In that right order, we can enjoy God’s gifts without being enslaved by them.

The Seriousness of Idolatry and the Breadth of God’s Mercy

Exodus 20:5–6 speaks of visiting “the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,” yet showing “steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.” This language highlights two things:

Idolatry is serious. Turning from the living God to idols has real consequences, not only for individuals but across generations, as patterns and attitudes are passed on.

God’s mercy is far greater than his judgment. Punishment is described as extending to “third and fourth generation,” while steadfast love reaches to “thousands” (the idea being thousands of generations). The emphasis is on the overwhelming magnitude of God’s covenant love toward those who love him.

This contrast underlines why loving God above all is both solemn and wonderfully hopeful: our choices matter, but God’s mercy is vast.

How to Love God with Heart, Soul, and Mind

Jesus’ words—“with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”—describe a total, integrated love:

Heart: the center of desires, affections, and will.

Soul: our life itself, our selfhood and identity.

Mind: our thoughts, understanding, and worldview.

These are not separate boxes, but overlapping aspects of a whole person. To love God with everything means that no part of our life is cordoned off from him. Here are concrete ways to cultivate such love:

Core Practices

Study and meditate on Scripture (mind and heart)
To love God, we must know him as he truly is, not as we imagine him to be. Regular reading and meditation on the Bible let God’s own self-revelation shape our thoughts and affections.

We replace purely worldly narratives with God’s truth.

We let his promises comfort us and his commands challenge us.
Over time, our thinking is renewed, and our heart learns to delight in what delights God.

Pray continually (heart and soul)
Prayer is an ongoing conversation with God: praising, thanking, confessing, pleading, and listening. Throughout the day we can turn to him with brief prayers, silently or aloud, expressing dependence and trust.
It is important not only to speak, but also to “listen” in the sense of being attentive—through Scripture, inner conviction, and providential circumstances—to how the Lord is leading us. Prayer anchors our inner life in God rather than in shifting circumstances.

Obey his commands (heart, soul, and mind in action)
Jesus links love for God directly with obedience: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word” (John 14:23). Obedience does not earn God’s love; it expresses and deepens it.
Loving God means yielding every area of life—relationships, sexuality, finances, speech, ambitions—to his will. Each act of obedience is a small “yes” of love to God.

Rely on the Holy Spirit
We do not generate love for God by sheer willpower. Scripture teaches that God pours his love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, and that the Spirit enables us to cry, “Abba, Father.” True love for God is a work of grace.
Therefore we can pray: “Lord, increase my love for you. By your Spirit, change my heart, reshape my desires, and give me joy in doing your will.”

Avoiding Idolatry

To have “no other gods before me” is not only about rejecting false religions or physical idols. It also addresses the subtle idols of the heart—often good things loved too much.

Examine your heart honestly
We can regularly ask:

What do I fear losing the most?

What occupies my thoughts when I have nothing else to think about?

What am I willing to disobey God for in order to keep or gain?
These questions often reveal where we have placed something “before” God.

Recognize that idols can be good things
Work, family, ministry, comfort, reputation, romance, or security can all become idols if they become ultimate. God calls us to receive such gifts with gratitude, but not to let them rule our heart. Loving God most actually frees us to love other people and things rightly—without crushing them with expectations only God can fulfill.

Worship God exclusively
To worship God is to adore, trust, invoke, and thank him as the only Lord. Regular, intentional worship—both privately and with the church—reorders our loves. It reminds us who God is, who we are, and what truly lasts.

Steward resources humbly and trustfully
How we use time, money, and energy reveals what we love. Generous giving, serving others, and practicing rest (such as Sabbath patterns) are practical ways of saying:

“My life and resources belong to God.”

“I trust God more than my own productivity or savings.”
Resting in God’s care loosens the grip of self-reliance and the fear that we must control everything.

Building Devotion in Community

Loving God fully is not a solitary project. God places us in community so that we can encourage, correct, and strengthen one another.

Prioritize Christian community: Gathering regularly with other believers for worship, teaching, prayer, and fellowship keeps our hearts aligned and prevents our love from growing cold.

Seek accountability: Trusted brothers or sisters can help us notice idols, blind spots, and areas of drift we would miss on our own.

Serve others selflessly: As we imitate Christ in serving and sacrificing for others, our love for God takes concrete form. Love for God and love for neighbor are inseparably linked; the second flows from the first.

The Freedom of Loving God Above All

In summary, loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind is both a command and a gift. When God stands at the center:

We are freed from the tyranny of idols and the anxiety of losing them.

We become resilient, knowing that everything on earth is temporary, but God is eternal.

We live under the assurance that the Lord who gave his Son for us is “for us,” and nothing can ultimately stand against his purpose.

We grow into our true purpose: a life shaped by a deep, covenant relationship with the God who guides us, loves us, and desires our good.

Putting God first does not impoverish us; it opens us into a life of joy, meaning, and freedom—a life where every other good gift can be received, enjoyed, and surrendered under the gentle lordship of the One who is worthy of all our love.

What Maria Valtorta sees about the first commandment

Here a few extracts about what the Italian Mystik Maria Valtorta witnessed in this regard:

“The Law is simple, easy and good as it goes back to the original ten commandments, illuminated by the light of love. Come. I will show you which they are: love, love, love. God’s love for you. Your love for God. Love for your neighbors. Always love, because God is love, and those are the Father’s children who know how to live love.”

Maria Valtorta, The Poem of the ManGod, chapter 49. First Meeting of Peter and the Messiah

and another one:

“He command us to love our fathers, mothers, wives, children and say: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself?’ “. You must distinguish. We must love our fathers, mothers, wives and our neighbour, but in the degree indicated by God: “As ourselves.” Whereas God is to be loved above everything and with our whole selves. We must not love God as we love the dearest people among our neighbours: because a woman suckled us or because she sleeps on our chest and procreates children for us, but we must love Him with our whole selves, that is, with all the ability to love that is in man: the love of a son, of a husband, of a friend and – do not be scandalised – the love of a father. Yes, we must have for the interests of God the same care that a father has for his children, for whom he lovingly protects his wealth and increases it, and he takes care of and is anxious for their physical growth and intellectual education and for their success in the world.”

Maria Valtorta, The Poem of the ManGod, chapter 170. The Sermon of the Mount. The Beatitudes (Part One)

Here a longer quote, but absolutely relevant as Jesus himself explains the first commandment in depth:

„It is said in the Book that the Lord showed Himself on Sinai in all His fearful might, to say by means of it: “I am God. This is My will. And this is the lightning I hold ready for those who will rebel against the will of God.” And before speaking He ordered that none of the people should go up to contemplate Him Who is, and that also the priests should be purified before approaching the limit of God, that they might not be struck. Because it was the time of justice and of trials. Heaven was closed, as if by a stone, on the mystery of Heaven and on the wrath of God, and only the swords of justice flashed from Heaven on the guilty children. But not now. Now the Just One has come to consume all justice and the time has come, when without lightning and without limitations, the Word of God speaks to man to give him Grace and Life.

The first word of the Father and Lord is this: “I am the Lord Your God.” There is not one instant of the day in which this word is not uttered by the voice of God and is not written by His finger. Where?

Everywhere. It is repeated continuously by everything. By grass and stars, by water and fire, by wool and food, by light and darkness, by health and illness, by wealth and poverty. Everything says: “I am the Lord. You received that from Me. One thought of Mine gives it to you, another thought takes it away from you, there is no power of armies or of defence that can shield you from My will.” It shouts in the voice of the wind, it sings in the murmur of water, it gives off scent in the sweet smell of flowers, it is engraved on mountain tops, and it whispers, speaks, calls, shouts in consciences: “I am the Lord your God.”

Never forget that! Do not close your eyes, your ears, do not suffocate your consciences, so that you may not hear that word. In any case it stands and the moment will come when it will be written by the fiery finger of God on the walls of banqueting halls or on the waves of rough seas, on the smiling lips of a child, or on the pallor of a dying old man, on a sweet-smelling rose or on a fetid sepulchre. The moment will come when in the exhilaration of wine and pleasure, in the bustle of business, in the rest at night, during a lonely walk, it will raise its voice and say: “I am the Lord your God” and not the flesh that you kiss so avidly, and not the food that you gobble so greedily, and not the gold that you hoard so stingily, and not the bed in which you idle, and neither taciturnity, nor loneliness, nor sleep can silence it. “I am the Lord your God”, the Companion Who will not abandon you, the Guest you cannot drive out. Are you good? Then the guest and companion is a good Friend. Are you wicked and guilty? Then the guest and companion becomes the angry King and gives no peace. But He does not leave you. Separation from God is granted only to damned souls. But the separation is their unappeasable and eternal torture.

“I am the Lord your God” and it adds “Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” Oh! He really says that just now! And from what Egypt He is bringing you out, towards the promised land, which is not this place, but Heaven! The eternal Kingdom of the Lord, where there is no hunger or thirst, cold or death, but everything will exude joy and peace and every soul will be replete with peace and joy. He is now releasing you from real slavery.

Here is the Redeemer. It is I. Every human ruler may die, and through his death slaves may be set free. But Satan does not die. He is eternal. He is the ruler who has fettered you in order to drag you wherever he wishes. You are sinners and sin is the chain by means of which Satan holds you. I have come to break the chain. I am coming in the name of the Father and because I wanted to come. The promise which has not been understood is therefore now being fulfilled: “I brought you out of Egypt and of slavery.”

This is now being fulfilled spiritually. The Lord your God is bringing you out of the land of the idol who seduced the First Parents, He frees you from the slavery of sin, He clothes you once again with Grace and admits you to His Kingdom. I solemnly tell you that those who come to Me will be able to hear the Most High say to the blessed hearts, in a soft fatherly voice: “I am the Lord your God and I am drawing you to Me, free and happy.”

Maria Valtorta, The Poem of the ManGod, chapter 119 Jesus at the „Clear Water“. „I am the Lord your God“

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

5,7

post-848","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-about-god","category-love
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.1 -
