The shortest article ;) the next question is - but why and how can you know that Jesus is really God? Jesus lived on this earth over 2000 years ago. That was a long time ago and yet we know enough from records to conclude that Jesus is God: Jesus met thousands of people in the time when he was on earth and had such great influence that multiple of them let everything stand still go with him, accompanied him. Many of his apostles were later killed because Christianity was not welcome back then as a religion on this planet. However his apostles were so convinced of Jesus and his messages, they proclaimed his word, carried it out into the world and were also in great distress still standing behind Jesus even though he was no longer on earth. They literally gave their lives for him, died for him - which was no obstacle for them, since, as the bible shows, they have seen with their own eyes that God is more powerful and greater than death - that he can rise others and himself from the death.
I think this says a lot about the tremendous impression that Jesus made on many people he met and above all on his disciples who saw everything up close. During his lifetime, his disciples shared the experiences they had with Jesus and the stories were also recorded in writing. Four of these descriptions have been included in the Bible, the New Testament. It says that Jesus has done countless miracles. He brought the dead to life, healed all the diseases or congenital ailments that were common at the time, such as the blind, the lame, the dumb, increased miraculously bread and fish, walked over water, turned water into wine etc. and in the end he died for us in the most cruel agony and raised himself back to life afterwards. Since I have never heard of a person like Jesus who can or could do all of this, this indicates that Jesus was not human - but supernatural!
Some might say - did Jesus say that he is God? We mostly derive what Jesus said from the Bible, from the apostles' descriptions of the life of Jesus. It does not contain all the dialogues and statements that Jesus made in his years on earth, but, as I said, extracts and important events. The Bible says that Jesus gave clear indications that he is God:
For example, Jesus said, “I and the Father (addition from the author: in heaven) are one ”(John 10, 30) which means practically that he says that he is God. Thereupon the Jews wanted to stone him because of this claim that he is God due to blasphemy and Jesus speaks “what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” (John 10, 36-38). First of all, what does Jesus mean here by “works”? Jesus speaks of the miracles that he accomplishes. He has performed miracles to show that God is with him and that he is in God - that is, he is God. As God he is almighty, he can do everything, be it turn water into wine, heal the sick or bring the dead to life. Who could do this before him and who after him? Jesus was in the end also killed for saying that he is God.
Some people will still think, but why does Jesus keep talking about "father" when he is God himself? Jesus is referring to the Trinity, i.e. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A concept that is not easy to understand - but God is supernatural, how can we humans ever fully understand God? In my opinion, the book "Who made God?" By Ravi Zacharias and Norman Geisler explains this well. Imagine a triangle. The whole triangle is God; thus one triangle - one God; however, each corner of the triangle is in a different position and a separate element of the whole God. That means all three parts together make up God and are God, each part is part of God. So Jesus is also God because he is part of God, but he is not God the Father and not the Holy Spirit. But both are with and in him as he is in them. God has three forms but is one in his capacity as God. Just as Ravi Zacharias and Norman Geisler explain this well, love itself is also triune: For love, it takes a lover (e.g. God the Father), a loved one (e.g. the Son of God, so Jesus) and a loving spirit (the Holy Spirit). Together they form a unity - love - but it also takes all the different elements to make love whole - so that love makes sense. Appropriately the excerpt from the Bible from 1 John 4:16 where it says "God is love" - that is, Trinity!
If someone says "Well I respect Jesus, he was a great prophet, but I do not believe he is God". That would mean that this person would not trust in what Jesus said and would not believe that Jesus died for a good reason to defend the truth. Therefore this person assumes that Jesus was partly a liar or a lunatic. How can the same person then think that he was a great prophet at the same time. If one believes in Jesus and his messages, then one also has to believe in his word - and thus that he is lord!
